Coding vs qigong

Daily writing prompt
What skill would you like to learn?

There is wishing you had a skill and there is liking to learn it.

I wish I could know how to code. I have taken a non-interactive, set-your-own-pace online course in coding, but I was not captivated and soon let it fall to the wayside.

I also wanted to learn hip hop dance. Last year I joined the local dance academy (for one hour of class per week). Although I loved dancing with other women, I can’t say I liked learning the choreography – it was intensely difficult. (The “beginner” level was populated by people who’d been taking lessons for years.) I had to practice alone at home for extra hours each week just to keep up. I loved being part of the dance showcase though and I loved my teacher, who was super encouraging. The performances were the final reward of all that hard work, and I loved the energy on stage with the other dancers and the audience, and I felt great about having accomplished it.

I guess the key there for me was having an in-person, real-time experience, with a goal at the end, in order to complete the course, even though I didn’t always like the process. It helped that the teacher was excellent both in skill and ability to pass on the skills. (I’m taking flamenco this term at a different place, and the teacher is a highly-skilled flamenco dancer and also a truly lovely person, but the teaching is another matter.)

This morning I tried qigong (on my own, thanks to youtube) and really enjoyed it. It’s not a “skill” I wanted to achieve, per se, but rather to try practicing, just for enjoyment.

Teaching is a good skill to have, as then others can benefit.

Here are two Qigong videos I tried, and really enjoyed this very gentle exercise.
